Pontypool Public Realm Improvements
Pontypool Public Realm Improvements was a key project for Torfaen County Borough Council (TCBC) to improve the core retail area of George Street and Commercial Street.
This regenerated area is a modern, pedestrian friendly, un-cluttered Town Centre. It is a flexible public space suitable for outdoor markets and large scale community events which will increase usage and become the thriving heart of Pontypool.
The construction was completed within the programmed 27 week timescale and £1m budget.
The key engineering challenges of the project were to provide an aesthetically pleasing finish with a construction that would withstand the loading of heavy vehicles. The gradients of the streets which were not pedestrian or disability friendly were re-engineered including a new discrete drainage system.
The key construction constraints were to build the project whilst maintaining access to all businesses during working hours and accommodating a weekly market.
