Abergavenny Public Realm Improvements
Following appointment by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC), Griffiths undertook refurbishment works to Abergavenny Town Centre consisting the Reconstruction of Carriageways and Footways.
Abergavenny is an historic market town and a key requirement of the scheme was to produce a finished product in keeping with the surroundings. This was achieved by using locally sourced natural stone and products. To add variety some modern materials were used alongside the natural stone in the format of coloured resin bound material to define traffic routes. This is clearly demonstrated in St Johns Square where the area has been changed to a largely traffic free zone, creating a public open place with the addition of street furniture, tree planting and landscaping. Seating areas outside several commercial properties were introduced producing an environment encouraging meetings, leisure activities, displays, market stalls etc.
A significant requirement of the contract was to complete all works before the commencement of the Welsh National Eisteddfod, held in Abergavenny during summer 2016. Completion of the works was achieved by July, immediately before the Eisteddfod opening, which was a significant achievement despite the delays and variations the street works encountered.
Works to deliver the project were carried out whilst maintaining access to shops, businesses and for the public. Prior to commencement, Griffiths were involved in ECI, including consultation with MCC, Town Council and local business to inform the public, plan the works and assist in the final selection and procurement of materials. Our dedicated Public Liaison Officer worked with the community to ensure the works were delivered with minimal distribution to the Public and surrounding businesses. This was achieved by: face to face contact with all local business owners; a pre-start information evening, a ‘drop-in’ information centre and regular letter drops to business owners.
