Cleddau Bridge Resurfacing
Work consisted of the removal of the original surfacing and footway construction and water-proofing membrane; repair of the existing steel deck plates; re-application of a modern water-proofing system and resurfacing the carriageway with an innovative machine laid mastic asphalt material.
Additional deck drainage was provided in the footway/cycleway areas, and both mid-span movement joints were refurbished.
At the southern approach to the structure a new Toll Plaza was constructed with modern barrier/ticket booth facilities giving better provision for wider and heavier vehicles. At the northern end, side-road junctions were re-aligned to improve safety.
To increase the effectiveness of a previously completed internal strengthening scheme, the traffic laning was reduced from 4 lanes to a single 3.2m wide lane in each direction with a central ghost island. Interlocking traffic separator barriers were installed between each traffic lane and the adjacent footways. Footways were widened to 3.2m to provide a shared pedestrian/cycle facility in each direction.
