Behind the Scenes at the Bascule Bridge, Swansea

The recent removal of the 80-ton Bascule Bridge from across the River Tawe is part of the Council’s regeneration of the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks area.

Whilst a huge crane, capacity 1750 tons dominated the landscape, Griffiths, as part of Swansea Highways Partnership, had been working behind the scenes for several weeks preparing the area for the works. Ensuring the crane was located on safe and stable ground involved complex engineering tasks and multiple road closures were necessary during the removal works to ensure the safety of all concerned.

“We are grateful to local businesses and residents for their understanding and patience during this time” commented Griffiths’ Site Agent, Neil Richards

The removal of this Cadw Scheduled Monument in a safe planned manner is testament to the collaborative working of all stakeholders in the scheme which included; iBEX Rope, Mann Williams, Roger Bullivant, Gown Engineers, Russel Geomatics and Baldwins Crane Hire. The next Phase of the scheme entails the refurbishment of the bridge and supporting superstructure.
