Llangefni Link Road – Linking the Past to the Future

The Llangefni Link Road road project aims to bring significant economic benefits to Llangefni and Anglesey through the construction of a new road from the Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Pencraig campus to the B5420 Lôn Penmynydd, and then linking through to the existing Bryn Cefni Business Park road.

During planned archaeological mitigation for the construction of the road 52 early Christian graves were discovered across the site. Some of the cist graves, which date back to early medieval times, hold the remains of more than one person. A number of interesting artefacts were also found.

Following the archaeological discoveries made last Summer, described at the time by Archaeologists as a ‘time capsule’, the project team felt it would be a good idea to invite students from the neighbouring College and Nursery, as well as pupils from Canolfan Addysg y Bont, to fill and bury their own time capsules.

Students on the Independent Living Skills course at Coleg Menai filled their time capsule with a variety of items including photographs, newspapers and take away menus. Visiting site they buried their time capsule adjacent to the new roundabout which will, in the future, become an entrance to the Coleg Menai Pencraig site.

Pupils of Canolfan Addysg y Bont buried their time capsule adjacent to Meithrinfa Medra, close to where the new link Road joins the existing road at Ffordd y Coleg. They had been busy preparing a variety of items including letters to the future, their school uniform, a class photo and details of shops and fast food outlets available to them in 2017.

In the same capsule were items prepared by the children who attended Meithrinfa Medra. Each room at the nursery had prepared a book about themselves, their photos, what they ate and artwork they had made. They also included the Nursery’s price list. All their items were put in a hessian bag and placed in the container with those of Canolfan Addysg y Bont.

Both time capsules have now been buried and a slab with a plaque has been laid as a marker for those living in Llangefni in 2067 to open the capsules to see if, and how, times have changed since 2017.
