Shrewsbury Town Centre

As part of the pedestrian improvements and traffic calming measures being introduced to the town centre of Shrewsbury, Shropshire County Council programmed the replacement of existing footways from Castle Gates to Wyle Cop to be carried out during 2007.

This work involved the replacement of the existing paving slabs and kerbs from Castle gates through to Wyle cop, the installation of  “courtesy pedestrian crossings” and various related kerb-line alterations.

The existing paving slabs were replaced with natural Yorkstone sets similar to the High Street.  The concept design was by Urban Designer Nic D’Yong Associates in conjunction with Mouchel Parkman. The area  is very heavily used by shoppers, business people and tourists and is a major traffic route for buses and delivery vehicles.  Accurate programming and planning for the work was therefore necessary and this information was made available for dissemination to interested parties and stakeholders.  The project was procured using the ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) process.

The contract was split into two phases:

Phase I—consisted the provision of professional services during the period of Early Contractor Involvement and included an agreement of the final design and a Target Cost and also required Griffiths to be actively involved in the buildability, works programming, access during the works and liaising with interested parties and utility companies.

Phase II—consisted the construction of the works including continuous liaison with interested parties and the management of access and deliveries.
