Celtic Manor

The scheme consists of the construction and formation of nine new championship golf holes, a practice area and tee, 3 large viewing platforms / plateaus and hospitality areas of total approximate size 27,500m² and 2 new lakes of some 20,000m³ each.

The first stage of the project involved the cut and fill of approximately 600,000m³ of earth and rock excavated and deposited along the flood plain adjacent to the River Usk and used to construct a 2000m long flood bund, graded and shaped to suit the design of the new course and adjacent fairways together with detailed landscaping. Other works consist the construction of a new Reen Water Feature, large diameter culverts, chambers and headwalls, as well as 3,000m of golf cart paths, an access road from the existing golf club house and provision of site fencing.

Environmental aspects of the project include working over and adjacent to the River Usk candidate Special Area if Conservation and the Lower Usk SSSI, including mitigation procedures for otters, badgers, bats and in particular reptiles such as slow worms and adders. Additionally the whole scheme has been under a watching brief from Cadw in regard to the numerous Roman archaeology sites that lie within the site.
